THE FIRST DAY.

EXCELLENT FIELDS CARDED.

GLANCE AT THE FORM.

Excellent fields have been attracted for the opening of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting at Tienthain tomorrow, and although the eoing will he heavy the racing should he good. Betting will be on the win and place system.

The Mariii Steeplechase has drawn a Held of ten. Flashlight won over country at South Canterbury and Aslibuitoli. which were his last two starts, while -Monastic was second to him at the littei fixture. Chile has nothing to his credit this season, but Priniak was second to Red Sun at Fox ton. and won at Otaki. Royal Romance and King Mestor finished second and third respectively to Priniak at Otaki, while Royal Romance was third at Marton on Saturday. X igh t bou nd "s best effort recently was in running second to Santott in the Pareroa Steeplechase at South Canterbury, while Acrou was placed twice over steeples earlier in the season. The favourites may he — FLASHLIGHT MONASTIC XIGHTBOI'XD. A Large Field.

Twenty-five are encaged in the Woburn Handicap. Jazz Boy was successful on two occasions recently, while Second Innings has four consecutive victories to his credit in his last four starts. Lady Leigh has only been once out of the money in eight starts, winning on three occasions, her last success being at Ashburton over six furlongs in May. Raul Robeson scored over six furlongs and a half at Hastings last month, but failed to get into the money at Marton on Saturday. Captain Tudor is a useful sort, but has not raced for some time. Superior Guard's form has been promising, as also has that of Advance Plane, who was a winner at Otaki laM- month. Potent has

won three races this season, and has been placed on other occasions, while Earl's Court annexed a maiden event at Hastings last month in very easy style. Jan Ridd is a smart sprinter, but has had his attention confined to jumping recently. Sen Acre is stated to have been unlucky at Marton on Saturday, while of the others Gay Hunting, Bluffer, Sing Lee and Gladium seem the pick. A trio that may be favoured is LADY LEIGH SEN ACRE SECOND INNINGS. The Hack Hurdles.

Sunee, who is topweight in the Vittoria Hurdles, has proved himself a good horse on the flat, and has had some experience over the. battens. Middle has yet to make his appearance in this department, but has been jumping well at Wanganui. Taillight was successful at Marton on Saturday, and should again go k well. Taumau scored at Otaki, aijd' is good I in the mud. Scrap won over hurdles at fig Dunedin on *a very heavy track, while K Sinking Fund and King Mestar are- likely §§ improvers. Entheos would have been much harder to beat at Marton on Saturday if K hia saddle had not slipped, while Contract p won over hurdles at Greymouth last ■ month, with Chaste second, but they beat ' a very poor lot. Laggard was placed at Dannevirke, but Lustral did not get into " the money at Marton on Saturday. Jewish .Lad has been schooling well at Trentham. The Chief Event. The Wellington Steeplechase is the chief event of the day. Ciarion Call will be better suited by the country at Trentliain than at the Great Northern meeting. Ali Irish was a win tier over country at Te Rapa recently, and should again go well. Red Sun scored in a Hack and Hunters" .Steeplechase at Otaki in May. while Krination was third in the Great Northern Steeplechase. Despite liik mistake while schooling on Saturday at Trentham he should go well. Manawatu has not raced tor some time, but Santoft won this event last season, and in a recent winner. Bryce Street was second in the (.Jreat Northern Steeplechase to Valpeen, and suljtseiiuently occupied a similar position to All Irish at Te Rapa. He is one ot the most promising steeplechasers seen out tiiis season. Kinkle and Smilin' Thru were both successful at the (treat Northern meeting, the toi met- annexing two event*, while Smilin" Thru accounted lor the Winter Steeplechase. Kahunoke won tile Park Steeples at Napier l'ark last month, and was second to John Charles at Hastings, while Brigadore was second to Clarion tali in the Wanganui Steeplechase, and is a Very sate jumper. The best backed may be KRINATION BRYCK STHKKT ALL IRISH.

The Trentham Hurdles. All of tin se paid up for in the Trenthaui Hurdlts. with the exception of Kiibeii:'. and Pan-so. are in the Winter Hurdles on the last day. so that the farm displayed to-morrow will lie followed with interest. Silk Sox was a winner at Te Kapa. and linished fourth in the (ilea! Northern Hurdles at Kllersho. Donegal was third at the former fixture, while Court.vanl was successful in two brush hurdle events at the Canterbury .locke;, Club's mcctii-g at Riecarto'.i at Faster. and later won two more at South Cantoihury. John Charles won this event last year as well as the Winter Hurdles. He was recently successful over steeples at Hastirn-. Full of Scotch scored ill three hack hurdle event-; at the Great Xoithern meeting, and Charade won the Karamu Hurdles at Hastii gs. and th.' Century Hurdles at Wanganui dming the last tew months. Killx-ris annexed the Campbell Hurdles, two miles, at the Great Xoithern fixture, while of the other Snender. who won the Hawke's Bay Hurdles very easily last month, will have to be seriously considered. Whyte Handicap. The Whyte Handicap is the principal flat event of the day. Master Cyklon's last success was in the Easter Handicap at Wairarapa in April. He failed to get into the money at Marton on Saturday. De Friend won at Napier an<l Hawke's Bay recently over sprint courses, and he m good in heavy ground. Brazen King was a winner at Wanganui in May. while Enge scored over a mile and a quarter*'at Te Rapa last Saturday week. He for first in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham last July, and also won the Parliamentary Handicap on the second day. Ned Cuttle has been most consistent, winning at Wellington in March over a mile and three furlongs, and also at over a mile and a quarter at Egmont in very heavy going. Quadroon was a winner over a mile and a quarter at Otaki, while Alunga was successful at Hawera and Wanganui in May over seven and six furlongs, respectively. Lazybones beat a good field over seven furlongs at Ash'burton in May. Monipere won over a mile and a quarter at Dunedin in heavy grdurid'last'month, while Haughty Winner has an earlier engagement. Airam ' ran second at Te Rapa last Saturday week to Enge, and" Lady Montana won twice over seven furlongs at Otaki in heavy going. Conveyor, Joe Louis and Wagner seem the best of the remainder.
