PONSONBY BEATEN. TRY LOST 'OVER LINE. DEFEAT BT MOUNT ALBERT. With the exception of one match there was close scoring in the Auckland Rugby League’s championship matches on Saturday. Except Newton, all the leading teams held their positions * The Richmond team went to Papakura and there defeated the home team by a fairly close margin. Among Richmond's backs the two wingers, Jack and Brumley, were the most impressive, while Hadley, playing hooker for the first time, Devine and G. Tittleton stood •ut among the forwards. For Papakura Melnness played a sterling game on the wing, and the half-back. Crocker, A. Burgess and Anderson went wen. Hlrkt and Fogarty were the pick of the forwards. Burgess, and two penalty goals by Mclnnes.. WINNING TRY LOST. The match between Mount Albert and Ponsonby was keenly contested all tfie way. Mount Albert were tending by two points near the end, when Ponsonby made a great effort. Riley crossed the line and the winning try appeared to be certain, but he lost possession of the ball. F. Ust and Hansen scored tries for Mount Albert, McLachlan converting one, and also kicking a penalty goal. Brown and Campbell scored tries for Ponsonby; and Schroeder kicked a penalty <oal. DEFEAT OF NEWTON. After a fast and open game, which was very ragged at times, Manukau defeated Newton by 5 points to 2. Hill kicked a penalty goal for Newton early in the game, and the Manukau score was the result of a good effort by the backs, which enabled Kirkwood to go over close to the posts for Broughton to convert.
