GOLDEN MEMORIES

JUBILEE CELEBRATED. SWANSON SCHOOL EVENT. MANY OLD PUPILS PRESENT. Tire golden jubilee of the Swanson school was celebrated on Saturday, when about GOO old pupils and their friends assembled in the grounds. Proceedings were opened by the ringing of the school bell by the first pupil enrolled in 1888, Mary McGrath. ! An enjoyable afternoon was .spent in the exchange of reminiscences, and. in watching a programme of sports events. A social and dance was held in the hall in the evening. After the calling of the roll by the headmaster, Mr; D. V. Moore, the expupils, arranged in units according to the years of their, association with the school, paraded through the school grounds, led by a group of thirty pupils who had attended in the first four years of the school’s existence. The parade was headed by a piper. Mr. T. D. Thomson, chairman of the celebrations committee, read a letter from the first teacher of the school, Miss Linda Young, and presented to the school a photograph of Miss Kate Duncan, who taught from 1001 to 1016, the longest period of service recorded. •

A resume of the history of the’school was given, hy the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, M.P. for the district, who added his congratulations. Other speakers were Mr. 0. R. Mnnro; a member of the Auckland Education Board, and Mr. Chris Brown, a son of the first chairman of, the school committee.

. Members of the celebrations committee included Mesdames Ash, Insley,’ Pegler. Perris, Strahan. Blackman, Ross and Winter, Misses M. Freeman and C. Taylor, and Messrs. A. Perris, J. Crowe, C. Freeman and C. F.’ Brown, with members of the school committee, Messrs. W. C. Campbell, G. Watson Green, W. C. Calvert. C. Freeman, H. P. White, William Williams and R. Stansell. Mr. R. Wood was responsible for sports and Mr. R. Laurie for sideshows. The secretary was. Mr. A. E. Mettam and the assistant secretary Miss I. Knox.
