TE HAI'S GOOD SHOWING. (■old Vaals showed a return to huimpres*ive A\ondale form when lie won the Opotiki Handicap very decisively, after being ridden a patient race. To Hai. who wan at a good price, was always handily placed, but had no chance with the winner over the concluding stages. As a matter of fact Cold Vaals won very easily after taking charge about a furlong and a half from home. Kcna, who was a well supported third favourite, was responsible for a meritorious showing, but never roallv looked as t7;oug!i lie would win. Day \\ ind. who was second favourite, attempted to win all the way. but faded • •ut over the last two furlongs. Johnny Walls and Day Wind were clear as thev raced past the stand from Brown Lap. Te Hai, Mis* Lu and Kcna. Day Wind hit the front along the back, and led from Te Hai. Johnny Walls. Brown l.ap. Mis S Lu, Kena and Ke<piiem. Four furlongs from home Day Wind was still showing slightly in front of Te Hai. find this pair was followed by Brown Lap. Kena and Requiem, while Cold \ aa Is was commencing to make a fast forward move. The last-mentioned continued his run and had actually taken charge before they turned for home. Te Hai was still handy and Day Wind had diopped back third. Nothing had a chance with Cold Vaals over the last Lit [and he went on to win by a length and a half from Te Hai. who' beat Kei.a Inhalf a length. Then came Cay Kebo'l. Day Wind, Brown Lap, Miss Lu and Requiem.

A Race Divided. The Novice Handicap was run in two divisions. In the first Miss Clipper, who was at a double figure price 011 the win machine, was always handily placed and stayed on to pet the verdict* bv a length from Spearford. who was also at long odds to win. The latter was well hack early, but came home solidly. Lapidarian was slow to move, and Gold Petal led out from Slant. Miss Clipper, Devon and Very Clad. Cold Petal was still in charge across the top, and turned for home clear of Miss Clipper and Spearford. who had run up fast, with Slam. \ cry Clad and Devon heading the others Miss Clipper did best over the last bit to win decisively from Spearford, with \ cry (.lad two lengths awav third Next to finish were Devon, Libra, Hesketoon ami Lrfipmarmn.

In the second division the well-backed Ngawiri was successful. He was not far from the leaders crossing the top and ran into second place entering the stiaiglit. Iron! then on he outstaved King Silver to win comfortably. Km Ora was first to begin from Kin"- Sifvci and A fella. King silver led acn.ss the top from Hempton, Aeella, Kia Ora and - jrawiri. King Silver was just in front of Ngawiri as they came into line, with Kia Ora and Hempton heading the others. Ngawiri finished best : > win going awav b\ a length and a half lrom King Silver, with Kia Ora two lengths further hack. Midland. Long Span, Hempton and Aeella followed.

Finished on Well. There was another surprise in store in the Steward*' Handicap, when the little fancied flav Sister won and returned a -rood double-figure dividend on the win machine. She was never further away than sixth, and once in the home stretch came through to beat Strathire. who was also at good odds on the place away than sixth, and in the home stretch came on beat Sen Acre and Strathire. and Salesman being the first to show "ii/.
