STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS,
Calculated to be of interest to farmers, public authorities and other users of wire, a newsletter containing the standard specifications for the material has been issued bv the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the New Zealand Standards Institute. The specification covers two grades of wire in gauges 4, 0, 7, 8, 9 10, 12. 14 and 10 in ordinary steel wire, and 12* and 14 gauge in the" high tensile steel wire. It lays down requirements tor pliability and tensile, or breaking, strength, and provide*? for two qualities of galvanised fencing wire, the difference between the types being the comparative thickness of the galvanised coating. Provision is also made for a method of marking that will readilv distinguish the two grades. If farmers and other users insist on being (supplied with a Grade and class of wire according to New Zealand Standard specification j N.Z.S.S. 143, they will have the advan i tage of knowing, for example, the j weight of zinc coating on the wire thev purchase, which will determine its resistance to corrosion, and therefore j the effective life of ths fence oil which I it used. j
