Topical, And Of Interest

A PROFICIENT JUMPER. All Irish, who is to fulfil his engagement in the Otara Hurdles at the Bay of Plenty meeting on Saturday, looks (lone the worse for his outing in the Remuera Hurdles last week. His third in the latter event was a satisfactory effort, and had he not been eased in his work owing t« a slight injury received while contesting the Te ltapa Steeplechase he would have been harder to beat. 'I here are few better jumpers than All Irish and more money should be in store for him before the winter meetings are over.

GOING ON THE RIGHT WAY. Although Fleetwind was not raced at the Great Northern meeting, there is nothing amiss with the daughter of Whirlwind, who is in regular work under F. Gilchrist's supervision. Fleetwind claims an engagement in a six-furlong hack race at the Waipa meeting next Saturday week, and her latest track work indicates that she is a possibility in that event. ADDITION TO TEAM. The latest addition to J. M. Buchanan's team is Beeswing, a three-year-old filly by Whirlwind from Black > Peri, by Little England from Mountain Dream. The newcomer is closely related to Bright Idea, winner of the Fitzroy Handicap at Ellerslie last Saturday. LIKELY-LOOKING YOUNGSTER. W. Fergus is educating a rising two-year-old colt by King Lu from Miss Dazzle. He is a compactly built youngster, showing plenty of quality and is fairly well grown. During her short career on the turf Miss Dazzle, who was by Illumination, showed very promising form as a jumper, winning. two steeplechase events at Ellerslie out of three starts. NEW STARTING POINT. According to southern reports the runaway victory of Oratory from No. 1 position at the barrier in the last Thompson Handicap has led to the provision of a new starting point for mile races at Trentham. Formerly barrier was erected about 40 yards from the entrance to the back straight, and horses which d-ew outside positions were at a great disadvantage. The new site will enable all the starters to get a straight and even run into the back stretch.

JUVENILES AT RICCARTON. H. and A. Cutts, as usual, have the largest contingent of rising two-year-olds in work at Iliccarton (says the Christchurch ''Star-Sun''). They have six in hand at present, but none of them has reached the sprinting age yet. Five are owned by Sir C'harlea Clifford. Winning Rival is by Bulandshar from Kivalry, dam of Rival Hit. Great Swoop is by Magnus from Swoopalonp, dam of Sky Pilot, a promising steeplechaser last winter. Jameaux Ravine is by Winning Hit from Brave Deed, so is of the same family as Zeebrugge and Falkland, two smart but unlucky horses. Gay Hind is by Magnus from Winsome Hind, a young matron, a half-sister to Wild Chase. Dress Parade, a sister to Nightdress, by Nightmarch from Ball Dress, is getting her prelim irary education. The other youngster in the stable is Rebel Lass, by Robespierre from Toti dal Monte, therefore a sister to Rebel Lad, a good performer a few seasons ago. This filly is owned by Mr. W. Connolly, of South Canterbury, who purchased Toti dal Monte some time ago.

WAIPA RACING CLUB. Acceptances for all events at the winter meeting of the Waipa Racing Club, to be held at Te Rapa on Jnn« 25, close with Messrs. Blomtield and Company, Shortland Street, Auckland, at 5 p.m., or with the secretary, Mr. J. G. Wynyard, Te Awamutu, at 8 pjn, next Friday.

IN WORK AT ELLERSLIE. After being out of action for a couple of seasons, the Acre gelding Gloucester lias been put into training again. When attached to J. F. 'I'utclien's stable at To Ka|>a this hack give every indication of developing into a galloper above the average, but unfortunately went amiss. He is a halt'-biother to Adalene, winner of the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie in ID.'ili. Before resuming work at headquarters Gloucester was given a fail amount ot exercise around the roads and is in good order to commence a further preparation.

HAS HAD SOME EXPERIENCE. Orenda, who recently joined I. Tucker's team at Ellerslie, was given a trial over four schooling hurdles yesterday morning and got through his task in a satisfactory manner. It is some time since Orenda raced, but a few sensor.; ago he ran second on a couple of ocu-jjions in hurdle events at Whangarci. A PROFITABLE GALLOPER. La- j Montana has been a great proposition for her owner-trainer, B. Burgess, of Masterton. She had won three times prior to achieving a double at the Wanganui meeting and recently followed this up by winning on both days at Otaki. THE FIRST WINNER. 1 lie first to win of the draft of untried New Zealand horses which went to Singapore several months ago was Lord Gray, by Lord Warden from Graceful. Lord Gray won at his first two starts., the second time in runaway fashion, and so tar has proved the best of the consignment. AUSTRALIAN TRIP IN VIEW. during the short time that Strctto has been in work at Ellerslie she has made good headway and is looking very bright and healthy. If this mare goes on the right way she will be given another opportunity to make good in Australia. If the trip eventuates Stietto will be taken over by her trainer, K. S. Bagby, in time to compete in the principal races at the A.J.C. spring meeting at Kandwick. SHOWING WAS ENCOURAGING. Making a reappearance after several months, Professional was responsible for an encouraging effort when he ran third in the Orakei Hurdle Race last Saturday. He only commenced Tacing over hurdles last summer, and with a little more experience should pay his way as a jumper. The race Professional had last week sharpened him up a good deal and he will be an improved horse the next time he goes to the post.

NOVICE HURDLERS IMPRESS. Two novice jumpers who raced at Napier Park were Silver Jubilee and Small Boy, both of whom may become successful hurdlers (says a Hawke's Bay writer). Silver .Tubilee competed on the first day of the meeting, and after jumping well and making most of the running he finished fourth. For a novice he jumped splendidly, taking the obstacles smartly and correctly. With the ordinary improvement which should accompany experience and his ability on tUe flat he may develop into a smart hurdler. Small Boy competed on the second day and had no difficulty in winning. The opposition was weak, but the Psychology gelding is a smart novice and gave a dashing display of jumping.

CHANGE OF QUARTERS. TLs Matamata trainer W. J. McLean did not return home after the Great Northern meeting with Trilliareh and Bass He has secured accommodation at Mr. E. J. Rae's stable, Greea Lane, and the balance of his team, which includes Jonathan, Marie's Acre, Philcourt and three rising two-year-olds, are due to arrive at their new quarters to-day.
