RAGWORT CONTROL.
COMBATING THE MENACE. EFFORTS OF DEPARTMENT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TUAKAU, Tuesday. Reference to steps taken by the Government to combat the ragwort pest was made by the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Minister of Agriculture, speaking at Tuakati last night. For the first time in the histmy of a New Zealand Government a comprehensive attempt had been made to eradicate the weed. Trior to Labour taking office the spread of ragwort had become such a menace that it had become a question of whether the farmer retained his land or whether the rapwort took the upper hand. Last year the Department of Agriculture had found £75,000 for lalniur, to combat the spread of the weed, and £1:5,000 for the purchase of sodium chlorate. The Minister acknowledged the co-operation of county councils whose efforts to destroy the menace were respected.
