BREEDING TELLS.

SAPLING WINNER.

MEMBER OF SUCCESSFUL FAMILIES. BIHGEM-FETER THE GREAT CROSS. That breeding will tell was fully demonstrated by Bed Rock, latest winner of the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. Viewed from every angle, it must be stated that she is an almost perfect product of highlyperformed families. There were few better bred or better racehorses than her sire, Nelson Derby, who, though bred in New Zealand, was a son of American parents. His sire, Nelson Bingen, was a successful son of the mighty Bingen (2.6%), who headed the sires' roster in America for several years, while Norice, the dam of Nelson Derby, was imported from the United States by the late Mr. James Pettie in 1903. Norice was among the most fasliionablybred pacers of her day, and after winning races under the guidance of the late M. ("Manny") Edwards and D. J. Price (just retired ir Melbourne, Victoria, after over thirty years' success with both trotters and gallopers) she was sent to the stud with a record of 2.10, which was outstanding in those days.

After her first foal she was purchased by the late Mrs. M. Duncan, and at the famous Coldstream Stud at Fendalton, Christchurch, she produced a line of highclass performers in Nelson Derby (winner of the Great Northern Derby in 1920 and the Auckland Cup in 1926), Native King (winner of the Dominion Trotting Handicap, 1923), Cole Queen, Nelson Fame, Derby Chimes, Derby Bells and Lord Derby.

On Norice's side Bed Rook has an infusion of the famous Peter the Great blood through Great Audubon and a double strengthening of thoroughbred through Telemeter and Perkin Warbeck. Athelny Lass, the dam of Bed Roc-k, is also a product of the world's most successful blood combinations, known as the BingenPeter the Great cross. She was a good mare on the race tracks, having taken a record of 2.5 2-5 for one mile and a quarter. She was bred by Mr. J. Slauger at Methvon, Canterbury, and is a half-sister to War Buoy, who won the New Zealand Sapling Stakes in 1933 in 321 3-5, which is still, the recoid for the race; also to another' good performer in Dolly Derby, who has a record o£ 3.21 for
