LOST SIGHT OF.

VALUE OF SAILORS' HOME.

FINANCIAL HELP NEEDED,

That the community appeared to have lost sight of the value and even of the very existence of the Auckland Sailors' Home was the opinion expressed by several speakers at the annual meeting of the home last night. If a greater measure of public support were not forthcoming, it was stated, it was possible that there would have to be a restriction of the long-established activities of the institution.

Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, which were previously published in the "Star," the president, the Hon. C. J. Carrington, M.L.C., stated that the surplus of £244 was obtained only by the fact that £292 was brought into account from the Samaritan Fund. Actually there had been a loss of £297 on the provisioning and servicing of boarders. In view of the important work of the institution, the chairman continued, it would be regrettable if there were any curtailment of its work.

"I am sure that every subscriber to tbe home realises that it would be a disaster to Auckland if the institution should cease to progress," he added. The building was now over 50 years old, and an expenditure of £200 or £300 would be required in that direction.

Mr. Carrington's view* were supported by Captain R. S. Lewis, who expressed the hope that the approaching street appeal on behalf of the home would receive a generous measure of support.

The following officers were re-elected: Patron, the Governor-General, Viscount Galway; president, the Hon. C. J. Carrington, M.L.C.; vice-president, Captain R. S. Lewis; council, the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. W. B. Darlow (both ex-officio members), and Messrs. E. H. Potter, G. W. Sanders, D. B. Patterson, F. E. Sutherland, W. M. Jackson, E. Anderson and the Hon. J. Trevethick, M.L.C.; secretary, Mr. T. E. Whitton; auditor, Mr. W. Taylor; honorary surgeon, Dr. D. N. W. Murray.
