LOCAL BODIES.
PAPAKURA BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Papakura Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the Mayor, Mr. S. Evans, presiding. A motion of sympathy was moved by the Mayor to Mr. 11. E. McEntee, the last Town Board chairman, in his recent bereavement by the' death of his father. Resignation of Foreman—The resignation of tilie foreman, Mr. Jus. Morrileau, was received. It was decided that this should take effect'in November, and to •xpress 'the council's appreciation of his nearly 20 years' service to the Town Board.
Stock Route Conference.—The Alayor and llcssrs. D. J. Graham and J. S. de Montalk were appointed as delegates to attend the conference called by the Manurewa Borough Council for Jnno 23 to consider stock route proposals. Welfare League's Suggestion—A letter from the l'apakura Social Welfare League suggested the council should recognise the long service given the League as chairman by Air. 11. JC. AlcEntce, the Town Board's last chairman. The council decided that it was for the Welfare League to take the initial step, and that the council could co-operate when they knew the League's intentions. Straying Stock Nuisance.—The council decided to take steps immediately to drive all stock to the nearest pound. No Increase In Rates.—The Alayor, in submitting the estimates for the coming year, said that the legal and finance committee) had gone thoroughly into the matter of rates and 'had decided to keep the council's promise not to increase the rates. They would remain at 3.7 d, notwithstanding a 35 per cent increase in the hospital rate. This would necessitate a much Uglier 'hold on expenditure, especially in the purchase of metal and materials. "
