SEVERE GALE.
CANTERBURY SWEPT
(By Telesrnph.—Pi-ess Association.) CHKISTCHURCH. this day. A severe south-west gale swept Canterbury throughout the went; _ f , n ,] Heavy and persistent rain fell from Saturday evening onwards and it wa.s accompanied by strong winds. Tiie wind, however, died down this mornin". Many districts have reported that low-lying areas were covered with surface flooding, but. although rivers were running bank high in some places no serious flood damage was reported. All parts of the province reported heavy rain throughout the week-end. Actually some rain would have been welcomed by farmers, but the amount desired was far exceeded. In mo;t districts the fall had been preceded bv a long spell of dry weather. It has been the best late autumn for farm work for a number of years, enabling a heavy late sowin? of wheat. This sowing. however, will be seriously interrupted by the rain of the last two days, and. unfortunately, the bad weather much earlier in the year had left mu-h leeway to be made up by farmers in planting their crops. Much low-lvinrr land, which was to have been planted in wheat, was flooded by fall.
