YOUTH EMPLOYMENT.

"TOO OLD AT TWENTY."

(To the Editor.) I am a youth of eighteen years with four vears** secondary education as an A grade free place pupil. My case* 1 is typical of many. I consider that I possess average intelligence and personality, but that opinion is entirely | unshared, a»5 in the field of labour requiring these attributes I find that I am a total superfluity. I have tramped the city for months and placed applications with every likely business house, board office, etc., always with the same result—too old. I am weary of copying mv testimonials, which are very good ones, and of writing out applications requiring paper, envelopes and stamps which I can ill [afford. My application for a clerical position with the Government brought the ironical reply that my educational qualifications were not lygh enough. However, the Labour Government has promised to help the youth of the country, so perhaps an application to Mr. Semple for a position in his pick and shovel gang will meet with success. I have a temporary job in a garage, so my hands are getting nicely hardened and in good condition for wheeling a barrow. Ido not despise manual work, far from it. I find it very interesting, but I would like the chance of using my brains as well as my har.ds. ' i Last, but not least, it is no comfort to see the growing disappointment and anxiety of my parents. I ANOTHER GRAMMARIAN.
