TRADE AND PROSPERITY.

THE OVERSEAS MARKET BALANCE

(To the Editor.)

Allow me to contradict "Not a WeedKiKer" in saying that, 1 criticise the present Government for giving me the means to improve my living and home comfort*. I give credit where credit is due, and that i& to oxerseas trade. I admit I like my home comfort*, but I am not a weedkiller, although, there are time*—but let that pas*. Even the 40hour week, which thi* Government introduced with every good intention of increasing employment was not. carried out literally by th°, party that introduced it. There were many men a short time ago doing continual overtime in the railway workuhope. Admittedly the Government i« not. pulling down lioust*, but why not? Has "Xot a Weed-Killer" ee*n tsome of the ehacks termed hou«e«? My complaint is that they arc closing their eyes to the breaking of the. by-laws which pretend to make houses fit to live in. The Government. has had nearly three years in which to build houses, and round Auckland there i* not one lot completed yet. And they are certainly not built for the worker. He cannot afford them. If Labour had kept iU promises and built something good and plain with a rent in proportion to a working man* wagem, I might. have a different cry. I *>till say living and housing condition* are wor.-e than ever. Pri<-e« and rent have risen out of all proportion to wage*. Ask my housewife—a«»k nn»! I would like "Xot, a Weed-Killer' , to point out what the. Government has done which cannot, be attributed to world-wide prosperity—except to give s-ingle men as mmk-Ii tr> live on as a family of six. It' there i* *ny fair play going to waste I should like a little coming my way, until then I *hal! remain OXCE LABOUR, TWKT, SHY.
