LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
MAORIS BEAT PAKEHAS
BRICHT SCORING GAME.
CHASE TURNS THE SCALE.
The annual League football match between the Maori and pakeha teams was .played at Carlaw Park yesterday afternoon before a good attendance. The Maoris won by 26 to 21 after a very fine game in which the sides were evenly matched. Both sides in the second half played high class football, throwing the ball about in a care-free style, making the game fast and spectacular. The losers led at tne end of the first half by 13 to 11, and it was then that bcth sides played bright and spirited football. Careless handling on two occasions let the Pakehas through for tries. For some time the scores were 21 all. The Maoris pressed hard to gain the advantage, and the chance came when their backs came downfield in a great passing rush; Chase then threw a long pass over the heads of his opponents to Bickerton, who ran in to score under the posts, and Chase converted, to make it 26 to 21. For the winners tries were obtained by Wilson (2), Mahiina, Hansen. Ririnui and Bickerton. Chase converted three tries and kicked a penalty. For the losers Duncan, Walker, Leatherbarrow, Mincham and Petersen secured tries, Mincham converting two and Scott one. Mr. S. Billman was tne referee.
