GREAT NORTHERN.

RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

THE OPENING DAY.

FINE FINISH IN HURDLES

There was some excellent racing at Ellerslie yesterday, when the Auckland Racing Club opened its winter meeting, and a particularly pleasing feature was that there was only one fall in the four jumping events on the programme. Xeither horse nor rider was injured. The weather was beautifully fine, and in consequence there was a very large attendance, 30,000 people being present, against 19,000 hist year. The sum of £73,474 was put through the machine, compared with £50,341 for the corresponding day last season, which was a Saturday, an increase or £29,133. Ihe Great Northern Hurdles provided the best finish that has been seen in a big hurdle race for some time. Erination was always one of the leaders, and half a mile from home had Huskie, Silk Sox and Jolly Beggar as his nearest attendants. Huskie and Silk Sox were with him at the last hurdle, while ,lolly Beggar was coming on the rails. Erination hit the obstacle, but diil not lose much ground, and in a great finish he boat Huskie by a neck, with .Tolly Beggar a head away third, and Silk Sox next. Huskie and .Tolly Beggar occupied the same positions to Sandv l)ix in the event last year. 1 he Cornwall Handicap also produced a thrilling finish. Jack Tar ran to the] trout early, anil was still prominent at t/hej home turn, where the colours of Tybalt, Valmint. Valamito, Flood Tide and Kilonsa were also showing up in the leading bunch. Kilonsa and Valmint then singled themselves out, and were fighting out the issue when Oheval de Yol-ee. who had been a long way back, came with a great run on the outside to get the decision by a head from Valmint. with Kilonsa a smiilar distance away third, followed by Knight of Australia. King Rev. Tybalt anil Flood Tide. The winner paid close 011 a score. T lie hot favourite. Hirangi, mane no race of the Hunt Club Hurdles. He ran to the front with about seven furlongs to go, and t>hou<rh challenged by A rain is beat him by two lengths, with Smilin' Thru six lengths further back, followed by Bells* of Bow. Outepan fell in this event. Pri nee Acre followed tip his recent consistent form by accounting for the Members' Handicap. Hunting Blood, the favourite, led into the straight from Prince Acre. Pa lustre. Surella. Gay Seton and Te Monowai, but was then done with, and Prince Acre went on in charge to score by a neck from Gay Seton. with Te Monowai a similar distance away. Maori Song finished on well in fourth place after being a good way back when half the distance had been covered, with Land Girl, Palustre and Xotium next.
