TRACK WORK.

SYLVAN HAS IMPROVED,

OUR PEGGY TAKES HER TIME

"Winner of the Stewards Handicap, for trotters, on the opening day of the Auckland meeting, Sylvan caught the eye on the Epsom track this morning as one who has benefited from the race. The same remark does not apply to Vanora, who has taken two events during the past fortnight and now looks to be a wee bit stale. Sylvan (L. F. Berkett) went with Dusky Chum (in saddle) and, trotting perfectly, got over a mile and a quarter comfortably in 3.24. They eased up then for a quarter, and just afterwards dashed over half a mile, which Dusky Chum left behind in 1.15, Sylvan taking a second longer. Tommy McElwyn (A. McKenzie) was paid . a compliment by Our Peggy (F. Smith) in being indulged in the lead during a run over a mile in 2.19, as the Our Thorpe mare was allowed to loaf. She.raced badly on Saturday, but looks in fine condition. Tommy McElwyn is also in great heart and he.did his work well.

The three-year-old trotter Great Surprise, who, starting a hot favourite in the opening event at the fixture, disappointed by breaking badly, *yent steadily over a couple of circuits at an even pace. He never attempted to put a foot wrong, but has lightened up a bit. Others to perform useful tasks were Reception, Nelson Chief, Grand Triumph, Nelson Prince, Autumn Lou and Lucky Love.
