THE WORKERS OF TO-MORROW.

(To the Editor.)

In support of those correspondents, to voer paper advocating the endowment of motherhood, will you allow mo space to quote from eonic of. our members of Parliament on this subject? Recently Mr. A. C. A. Sexton, meriil>er for Franklin. said (vide the "Star"): "In any superannuation scheme we are entirelr dependent upon those coining behind, and for that reason alone every assistance should bo given to parents to rear children. Tho State pays 15/ for children boarded out. Surely a similar amount should be jvaid to parents for the upkeep of their children."' On October t> of last year Mr. C. M. Williams, member for Kaiapoi. in debate on the Budpet (vide "Hansard'") said: "We cannot pay superannuation out of savings . . . the only real source of wealth, after all, is the labour of the people, and the children of to-day will be the workers of to-morrow. Therefore, all such superannuation, schemes must come to ruin, unless a sufficient number of younjr workers is always coming along to keep industry jroincr. and an adequate family allowance for parents is absolutely essential for the future solvency of New Zealand." The Hon. H. W. Perry "(Wellington) on September 24. 1037 (vide "Hansard"'). said: "Another remedy I suggest (against. abortion) is an increase in family allowances, whereby people who are prepared to have children, and so create asse:< fur tlie country, should be enrouraged and able to do so."' In addition, may I quote Mr. E. T. Rees. managing secretary of Kawke's Bay Hospital Board (vide "Star""): '"I would increase that (the present children's allowance) to 10/ and \i\\o parents of families, of more than two children £25 a year. The sum of £1.000.000 would provide for 40.000 children, and if it woul.l encourage 40.000 extra 'births for the cost of £1,000,000 it would be the finest thin? we ever did." S.A.
