Pandora, according to Greek myth was the name of the first woman on earth. After the theft .of fire from heaven by Prometheus, wrathful "ods caused Hephaestus to mould a woman of surpassing beauty and sent her as a present to Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus. Curiosity prompted Pandora to open a box or cask which stood on the threshold of *he house, whereupon there issued from it all the varied evils that afflict mankind, Hope alone remaining.
