DEBUTANTES PRESENTED AT CATHOLIC BALL

Impressive Ceremony At the Town Hall

The Town Hall presented an exceptionally brilliant scene last evening when the Catholic charity ball was held, and a large number of debutantes were presented to his Lordship the Bishop.

The decorations were carried out on unusual lines and added to the dignity and impressiveness of the ceremony. From the centre of the auditorium domes were festoons of lycopodium intertwined with red and amber fairy lights and yellow and golden flowers. Around the balcony a similar arrangement of festoons completed a magnificent effect, which was enhanced by the interior scheme of mirrored panels bordered with flowers and coloured lights. The pillars were obscured with gold enclosures, while an effective representation of the rising sun that formed cubicles in the hall shed further radiance on a scene of unparalleled charm, which was heightened by the lovely gowns of the debutantes as they made their obeisance.

The stage was cMßßJßiding in its decorative note. Skilfully set as a tropical coral island, and massed with exotic palms and foreign foliage, the scene was floodlit, while moving clouds and a huge full moon made a brilliant setting to the solemnity of the occasion ae each debutante was presented.

The presentation was, of course, the feature of the • evening, and the procession ae the girls marched slowly down the' -hall, heralded by a fanfare of trumpets, was a delightful picture.'

In the supper room the decorations were also worthy of special mention. Palms and yellow shaded lights and golden-toned flowers contributed to an artistic scheme, and the tables were adorned with scarlet berries, gold Iceland poppies, tangerine chrysanthemums and poinsettias. Bowls of Iceland poppies in shades of gold, and silver candelabra lighted with long, golden candles were, effectively used on the official table.

The Official Party. A fanfare of trumpets heralded the arrival of the official party, which comprised: His Lordship Bishop Liston, Monsignor Cahill, Monsignor Ormond, Moneignor Holbrook, Captain C. C. Plunket, Mr. C. C. Cairns, Mr. P. J. Hackett, Mr. W. C. Kemble, Mr. T. J. Sheahnn. Mr. X. C. Snedden. Mr. G. J. Brown, Mr. J. D. Foote, Mr. G. H. Briscoe, Mr. R. C. Johnson * and Mrs. M. Pillingj who wore a gown of mulberry lace and fur cape wrap, and Mrs. W. Bremner, who was in a black Chantilly lace frock and scarlet floral corsage.
