STRONG EXCEPTION TAKEN. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. Strong exception to a "secret" meeting held in the "borough chambers last week to discuss the position of Mr. C. Lafferty as chairman of the trading and finance committee was taken by Mr. Lafferty at a meeting of the borough council last evening.

Mr. Lafferty considered that remarks lie had heard were made at-the meeting ; were most unkind and ungentlemanly. "I believe I have juet as much right to the respect of my. fellow councillors and ratepayers as any other member of this couiJcJl,"|he added'.- During Hie long term pf service on, fne council .'.lie had worked fciajjjeet benefit OT'tTie town, and ; to?datfc : - had ratepayers about £1.15,000. The manner, in which the meeting was called and the remarks" passed were no credit to the councillors concerned, and no credit to Hamilton.

"It is not fair play. It is not British, and I wish to enter a strong protest," he added. Mr. Lafferty said.the remarks were also a personal affront on the Mayor, who had nominated the committees.

J Mr. J. E. Tidd admitted that he would not sit on any committee of which Mr. Laffertv was chairman.

The Mayor, Mr. H. D. Caro, snid he had nominated Mr. Lafferty as chairman because he was second to top of tlie .poll, and obviously enjoyed the conliiTence of the ratepayer, and because hr would be a suitable chairman.
