In convicting John Joseph Hodgens, aged 18, seaman, who was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was found without lawful excuse in possession of implements for housebreaking, a screwdriver, file and rubber gloves, and with two minor charges of theft,. Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., said: "You are only a lad, and you have made a pretty bad start in this country. I can't help but feel that you should be given a chance of pulling yourself together and settling down. Your atmosphere seems to savour of the romantic as a result of your reading trashy magazines. I hope so. If you want to carry on in the direction you indicate you are in for a pretty sorry time."
