SEARCH FOR LOST GALLEYS

DANUBE TREASURE HUNT. BUDAPEST. ' It is reported that a search for treasure belonging to Queen Maria of Hungary will soon be begun in the bed of the Danube between the towns of Esztergom and Parkanynana. After the battle of Mohacs, when King Lajos was drowned in a brook, his widow attempted to save the treasures of the Buda court. The treasures were loaded on galleys which started for Pozsony (now Bratislava), but the galleys were attacked by an army of enemy Hungarians and two of them were sunk.

The other galleys were later taken to \ ienna, where an inventory of King Lajos' treasures was made, and still exists in the Vienna archives.

It is believed that the two galleys, which have lain in the mud of the Danube for 412 years, will be excavated without much difficulty.
