Commenting on the decision of the Government to adopt the British Empire air-mail proposals, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, remarked that the present charge on a letter from New Zealand to the United Kingdom is 1/6 per ioz. As soon as the scheme comes into force, said Mr. Savage, all letters to and from Britain vrill be sent by air between London and Sydney and the postage will be lid per ioz. Information was not yet available as to the starting date of the new scheme, but it was expected to be in operation early in July. For the present, mail will cross the Tasman by >tea:aer. but it is hoped to see that portion of the route become part of the Empire air scheme in the course of a few months. The Prime Minister made it clear that the new minimum postage rate to Britain and Empire countries will be IJd per Joz.
