LOCAL BODIES.

PAPATOETOE TOWN BOARD. •> A meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board was held last night, the chairman, Mr. L. J. Kendall, presiding. Footpaths.—A letter drawing the board's attention to the lack of suitable footpaths in Cambridge Terrace was received and referred to the works committee for consideration. Change in Bus Terminal.—An application for the removal of the bus terminus was granted by the licensing authority. The bus terminus will now be shifted from Carruth Road, where it exists at present, to the corner of Shirley Road. On the suggestion of Mr. Tracey, the board decided to send a letter to the Welfare League complimenting them on their activities in bringing about this change. Extra Police Supervision.—A letter received from the Commissioner of Ponce stated that at-present there is not sufficient work to justify the pasting of another constable in the district. Museum Representative.—Mr. W. J. Nicholson was nominated by the board as a representative on the Council of the Auckland Institute and Museum. Fire Brigade.—The following officers were elected to the Fire Brigade committee: Superintendent, Mr. A. W. Eustace; deputy-superintendent, Mr. G. L. Shortt; first foreman, Mr. F. Knight; second foreman, Mr. G. P. Pennell; secretary, Mr. A. T. Macßeth. Motor Camp.—An application to establish a motor camp at Hillsdene. Great South Road was received. Th« sanitary inspector, Mr. Franklin, stated that he inspected the property and approved of the s'te arid lay-out of the buildings and sanitary arrangements. The board deferred the matter to the next meeting. Street Lighting.—ln regard to the matter of inadequate street lighting raised by Mr. M. Tracey, the board decided to place lights in East Tainaki, Portage and Shirley Roads. MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD. The Mount Roskill Road Board met last night, the chairman, Mr. C. M. McCullough, presiding. A report was presented by the Auckland branch of the National Committee of Life-saving and Learn-to-Swim Campaign. Dominion Road School.—ln reference to No. 13 subsidy labour, the Dominion Road School Committee advised that the work to be done at the schoolgrounds was mainly excavating and levelling to form a full-sized football ground. The board was asked to consider favourably the question of supervision, which in the committee's opinion would only be of a cursory nature. On the recommendation of the works committee it was decided to favour the request if satisfactory arrangements could be made, the board to agree to include the men on its subsidy payroll. Minimum Fare Trams.—For some time the board has desired the Auckland Transport Board to institute minimum fare trams on the Onehunga route. Last night the Transport Authority advised that this matter had been fully considered and as the circumstances had in no way changed since minimum fare trams were operated on the Onehunga route, nothing would be gained by giving the proposal a threemonths' trial. The request was, therefore, declined. The board decided to try again six months hence. Drainage Levy.—The Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board fixed Mount Roskill's contribution for this year at £285.

Paid Holidays.—The board deferred' consideration of a request received from the Auckland Local Bodies' Labourers' Union to fix two "certain days as the paid holidays for certain employees of the board under the local bodies' labourer*' award. Water Charges.—The members declined to adopt a motion by Mr. R. F. Sanft to change the present system of rendering charges for water by meter and adopt the principle of levying the annual minimum charge in one amount, the sum .fixed to be included on the rate demands to the ratepayers. District Division.—A motion by Mr. R. F. Sanft was not entertained to divide the Mount Roskill Road district into three divisions, to be entitled the eastern area, the western area and the southern area, each area to be represented by three members of the board. NORTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL. i The Xorthcote Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. R. Martin presiding. » Deputy-Mayor.—Mr. E. C. Fowler was reappointed deputy-Mayor. - Committees.— Three standing committees were set up. vii.: Finance, the Mayor (chairman) Messrs.. F. M. Peara, C?G Robertson. H. Burrows and E. C. Fowler; works* Messrs., E. C. Fowler (chairman), A. Golden, W. E. Aspden and W. Morrison; reserves. Messrs. A. E. HarcUng =• Destructor.—The Mayor and Mr. A Golden were appointed Northcote sentatives of the North Shore destructor committee. The Mayor stated that recently a further agreement had been signed covering the next five years. The annual contribution by Xorthcote would be about £30, compared with £70 to £80 in previous years. The appointment of a caretaker was also discussed. Stokes Point.—The report of the Xorthcote Domain Board stated that general maintenance to footpaths and attention to native shrubs and trees had been carried out with labour under Xo 5 scheme. The triangular ornamental* Maori fence, protecting the totara tree planted in commemoration of the erection of the flagstaff on the eve of the arrival of the American Fleet in 1908, was repaired and repainted. The flagstaff was painted and new halyards reeved. Power Board.—Mr. J. Guiniven, Mayor of Takapuna, suggested in a letter that the council should seek the co-operation of Takapuna in approaching the Minister of Public Works for alteration of the existing method of representation, so as to ensure a separate member for Northcote. Two representatives should be sufficient for Devonport, leaving two for Takapuna, and one each for Xorthcote and Birkenhead. The present management, he supposed, would have to remain for the ensuing three yean. In the meantime his services would be available to the people of Xorthcote in respect to local Power Board matters.
