SINGLE MEN'S PLEA.
BUSY LABOUR BUREAU.
IMPROVEMENT ANNOUNCED.
A special staff was k:;jt busy at tho Labour Bureau this morning dealing with the re-registration of unemployed, particularly single men. A deputation, consisting of Mr. W. T. Anderton, M.P., representing the Government, and Mr. J. Edwards, organiser of the Unemployed Workers' Union, met Mr. A. T. Grandison, of the local office of the Labour Department, and Mr. Ridler from the head office in Wellington, to lay before them the claims of the men.
One improvement announced was that in cases where necessity had resulted in reduction or waiving of the stand-down period the approved relief would be continued until inquiries had been completed and the resultant decision given. All interested men were required to re-register this morning and to make application for the waiving of the standdown period. Put On Sustenance. All those men who had refused farm work and were, therefore, classed as voluntarily unemployed, w*re put on sustenance immediately, as inquiries at the Placement Office Tevealed that there were only two vacancies for farm hands. Only experienced men are needed by farmers at present.
In the case of one man present at the Labour Bureau this morning, who had been unemployed for some time owing to his refusal of farm work, it was pointed out that two of his-'fingers had been, chopped off at the tips. He claimed that milking cows caused great pain in the fingers. He was placed on sustenance at once, and will be sent before a doctor for re-examination.
