HELPING WORKLESS.
SINGLE UNEMPLOYED.
GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE.
The Government was anxious to do everything possible to help tM single men who were fit to work and who were out of a job at present, said Mr. W. J. Lyon, M.P., in addressing the men concerned at a large meeting in the Epiphany Hall last night. Representations were made to Mr. Lyon and Air. W. T. Anderton, M.P., in connection with the grievances of the men.
Mr. Lyon said lie wished to thank Mr. J. Edwards, organiser of the Unemployed Workers' Union, for the part he had played in bringing forward the case of the men who were affected.
A motion was advanced that the Government should be asked to use its influence to enable single unemployed men to receive sustenance immediately while waiting for the State schemes to be put into effect, but Mr. Lyon said that it would not be practicable. The motion was' withdrawn in favour of an amendment arranging for the men to re-apply for sustenance to-day in co-operation with a representative of the Government and of the union. It was decided that Mr. J. Edwards and Mr. Anderton should place the case before Mr. Grandison prior to the claims for sustenance being filed by the men.
