ON STRIKE.

STABLE LADS' fPAY.

GIRLS TAKE THEIR PLACES.

Three hundred stable lads at Lamboiirn, Berkshire, struck; for an increase of pay recently, from 4ojf to 50/ a week. Several outside stablemen and girls volunteered for the work, says our London correspondent on'; May 24.

The girl volunteers have proved so satisfactory that there is now no fear of the preparations of the Derby candidates being hampered. . 1 v "The strike will not make any difference," said Mr. Fred Templeman, a leading trainer. "With these girls we could get along until Doomsday.' He was watching, with approval, a yard where six girls in jodhpurs and sweaters, were busy washing down concrete jrards, clearing out loose-boxes and carrying hay. "If the Newmarket lads come out on strike in sympathy, as has been proposed, it will alter things, but if the trouble is confined to Lamboiirn we will continue without trouble," added Mr. Templeman. The girls have been given quarters in a village a few miles away, and they are

driven to the stables at 6 a.m. each day under police escort. The only expressed antagonism came from a small crowd, shouting from-a respectable distance while the horses were at exercise. This unnerved the horses more than it did the girls, who had .one Derby candidate in their care. It is reported that there may be trouble in moving the honses to Epsom, as the strikers claim that transport workers will support them. Trainers are preparing to use non-union lorry drivers, if necessary. THE EPSOM TRACK. GOOD GOING ASSURED. THE DROUGHT BROKEN. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 30. The week-end rain has broken the drought, and good going is now assured at Epsoni for the Derby. Previously it was feared that the hard state of the track would mean the withdrawal of some of the horses.
