Make Yourself A W.P.B.

For Women

By Ann Bracken

A WASTE paper basket is required in every room in the house, but is seldom found in any but the living room. Here i? one that i*= easy and economical to make and tan be adapted to any mom. For living room or study it can be made from '>ak. walnut or mahogany paper, according to tlie furniture in your room; for bedrooms use cretonne or chintz to match curtain? and bedspread. while for bathroom, nursery or kitchen American cloth can be used. The box may be made any shape — square, hexagonal, octagonal—and any size. For illustration I will make a hexagonal one, tiring six pieces of card-

board each lOin x Sin. To make this you will need two stripe of material. •32Ain x 12in, one patterned for the outside, and one plain for lining. If you want the box the same inside and out use one piece 32Ain x 24in. and fold in half longways. You will also need, for the bottom, two pieces of material and one piece of cardboard 12in square. Sew the two strips of material together on the # wrong side along one long edge. Turn right side out, with join along top. Press. Tack linen from top to bottom, dividing material into six divisions each 5J inches, and leaving Jin at each end. Machine these division*. Machine together, on wrong side, the outer pieces at end A and at end B. Join the inner pieces neatly by hand. Slip in the six pieces of cardboard-

Press cardboard firmly to top seam ■nd stand box on seam on table. Shape with hands to correct hexagon and fold remaining 2in neatly to centre. (Diagram B.) Stitch firmly to hold shape and neaten the edge* if not selvedge. From the 12in square of cardboard cut a piece exact shape of top of box. but Jin smaller all way round. Cut two pieces of material same size and shape plus Ain for turnings. Machine together on three sides; turn side out: place cardboard between tho two pieces and neatly slipstitch remaining three sides together. Slip the finished bottom into box, press down as flat as possible and it is ready for use. If you wish to make the box with Ameri'-an cloth or oakpaper cut one strip lin wider than the other (i.e.. 32Ain x 13in). On the wrong side of the wider strip draw the six divisions for the cardboard, leaving one in.~h at tnp and two inches at bottom. Down each division paste or glue an inch wide strip of calico to prevent splitting when box is folded. Paste cardboards in • position, fold over top inch and one side Ain and paste down. Line with second piece of paper (or American cloth) and gum ends A and B firmly together on inside. Cover the bottom cardboard similarly and gum firmly to side pieces, which have been folded into centre.
