Round The Ladies' Links

ROTORUA TOURNEY.

MRS. FOOTE'S PLAY.

EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE

MRS. McARTHUR BEST ROUND

AT GLENDOWIE OPEN DAY.

Considering that she has played so little during the past two seasons, the performance of .Mrs. (J. W. Foote, of Ruawai, in being runner-up in the Rotorua ladies' golf championship is little short of sensational. Daughter of Mr. J. Banks, who for many years was headmaster of the Whakarewarewa Native School, she lived within a mashie shot of the Rotorua links, where she learnt the game. However, when teaching at Matangi and elsewhere she played very little and her onlv two seasons or regular golf were when she was residing in Whangarei and was a member or the Mount Denby Club. Since moving to Ruawai her onlv golf has been participation in the North Auckland ladies tournament, in which she was a semi-finalist three years ago, and rounds at Rotorua during the holidays. Until the beginning of this season she had not touched her clubs for nearly two years. Mrs. Koote is a member of the recentlyformed Ruawai Club, which has a ninehole course. The captain's prize match play event at Akarana was finalised this week, Mrs. F. Schischka (23) winning from Mrs. F. l'reston (11). It was a game in which opportunities were freely given by both players and finally Mrs. Schischka won at the nineteenth with the aid of a stroke after both players had taken six. Mrs. Preston played the first half in 43 and she was 2 down at the fifteenth after she had halved - " the fourteenth with a 7, Mrs. Schischka having a stroke there. Mrs. Preston took the sixteenth with a 4, but could only halve the next with a 4, having to concede a stroke. Then she got another opportunity, squaring the game at the eighteenth with a 6. Mrs. E. Philip (16) did well to reach the semi-final seeing that in only one

same did she get a stroke from any of her opponents. Prior to being beaten at the twentieth by Mrs.' Schischka, she had been taken a similar distance by Miss M. .Neville, and to the nineteenth by Mrs. L. Fa ram. The annual open winter championship meeting will be held at Akarana on June 22, 23 and 24. and it is expected that the leading Auckland players will participate and probably some visitors. Glendowie Open Day. A very enjoyable open daw ablv run by Mrs. Markwick and Mrs. K. B. Allen, was held at Glendowie yesterday.. The day was fine, though distinctly windy. In the afternoon one terrific shower, lasting about seven minutes, drenched many or the competitors, while the wind increased, making conditions more difficult. Those not uspd to a hilly course found it most tiring and after two rounds many weary bodies staggered back to the clubhouse. The scores on the whole were bad. with the exception of Mrs. M. G. McArthnr. who. with an 80. played to her handicap 117) and won the senior best gross score. Mrs. J. L. Campbell and Mrs. S. Keys were four over their handicap to win the senior and junior medal rounds. A 97 was good enough for Mrs. \V. R. Woolhouse (Akarana) to take the junior best gross score. Canadian medal foursomes in the afternoon resulted in a tie between three pairs: Mrs. Breed (Orakeil and Mrs. Nicholl '(Glendowie) winning on the count back from Mrs. McKelvie and Mrs. Stilling (Cllondowio). and Mrs. Grant and Mrs. Abbott fMiddlemore). Strangely enough all three pairs finished with a 7 on the eighteenth. The Middlemore pair missed an opportunity of winning by Wking three putts. The scores were:— Seniors.—Mrs. J. L. Campbell. 03—17— 70; Mrs. A. M. Grant, 95—17—78; Mrs. D. McCrone. 05—17—78. Juniors.—Mrs. S. Kevs. 102—26—76; Mrs. B. R. Breed, 105—28—77. The foursomes were played over 13 holes and the three pairs who tied all tallied 54.
