SWIFT ACTION.

GOLD-MINING LURE.

CANADA'S COLD NORTH.

PHYSIQUE OF GERMANS.

Varied experiences on the mining fields of Canada's frozen North, and in motion picture production, were recalled by a Canadian, Mr. V. Wheatley, who arrived by the Wanganella from Sydney this morning.

I: In 1929, when the Communist riots broke out in Northern Ontario and 2000 red and white Russians were involved Mr. Wheatley saw the swift action of three police officers of the famous NorthWest force, assisted by a few deputies, who restored order. He mentioned that the mining area was probably one of the most cosmopolitan in the world, but there had been no outburst of violence in the past nine years. There were French Canadians and Russians, Swedes Norwegians, Galiciana, Italians, Icelanders and Germans. The Icelanders, who were men of fine physique, belonged to a race which had few contacts with the world. The Germans, however, were physically superior to any of the other nationalities and were good law-abid-ing citizens. With such a mixture of races English was seldom spoken.

Extremely ridh in mineral wealth, Northern Ontario had deposits of nickel, copper and cobalt,' as well as gold, he said. It was a district where fortunes were quickly made and lost.

Engaged for the past year and a half on the technical side of the picture industry at Sound City, near Walton-on-Thames. and at Ivor, in Buckinghamshire, Mr. Wheatley had formed the opinion that technically Hollywood was more efficient than the English studios, due to greater specialisation.
