BRITISH AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP.

FIRST ROUND.

American Walker Cup Team Gets Through.

HOW AUSTRALIANS FARED

United Press Association. —Copyright

(Received 11 a.m.) LOXDOX, May 23. In the British amateur golf championship at Troon the Australian, H. W. Hattersley, drove the first ball in a steady drizzle, which later grew worse. Hattersley defeated Alec Hill, a member of the Walker Cup team of 1937, 2 up.

The British Walker Cup representative, D. H. Kyle, defeated L. Xettlefold (Australia), 5 and 4; M. J. Ryan (Australia) defeated P. Lucas, 2 up; R. MacGregor defeated C. W. Bundle (Australia), 9 and 7; T. S. McKay (Australia) defeated Mac Donald, 3 and 1.

The title-holder, R. Sweeny, defeated J. Hordern, 4 and 2.

Other winners included the Americans, R. G. Smith, F. Ouimet, J. Goodman, C. Koosis, M. Ward, Ray Billows, and the Canadian champion, Koss Soinerville, all of whom scored impressive victories.

P. B. Lucas, of Cambridge, the best left-handed golfer in England, it has been humorously suggested, should play the world's left-handed championship against Nettlefold. The "Daily Mail" described Xettlefold as the best lefthanded player in the world.

Lucas opened stronger than Evan, but they were all square at the turn and still square at the sixteenth. Xeitlier reached the narrow green of the short seventeenth with their tee shots. Both played poor approaches and Ryan won the hole with a 4 to be 1 up. Lucas was bunkered at the eighteenth, and Ryan took the hole and the match with a 4. Rundle was out of touch and had a disastrous experience against an almost unknown golfer, MacGregor.
