PROFOUND REGRET.

Japanese and Australian Iron Ore Embargo.

RECONSIDERATION URGED

SYDNEY, May 23. Japan profoundly regretted the Ausprohibition of the export of iron ore from Yampi Sound, which was regarded as an act of bad faith on the part of the Commonwealth Government, having regard to the large Japanese capital invested there, said the Japanese Consul-General, Mr. Kawai, in an interview.

Australia already liad raised high barriers against foreign migration and merchandise, and if as now she assumed an isolationist policy, for example, placing the embargo on iron ore, it was not only against equity but conducive to straining international relations and detrimental to friendship between Australia and Japan. Japan urged Australia seriously to reconsider her action.

SCRAP IRON STRIKE.

SYDNEY DOCKERS' THREAT

SYDNEY, May 23. The metal workers, otherwise the d'ockers' unions, to-night decided that in the event of the waterside workers defying the Federal Government's ultimatum regarding the loading of scrap metal for Japan, they would co-operate with the watersiders and refuse to do repair work on all ships entering the docks.

The waterside workers were warned a week ago that unless they agree by to-morrow to load all cargoes offering the licensing provisions of the Transport Workers Act will be applied to the Sydney members of the Waterside Workers' Federation and disciplinary action will be taken at other ports. All Sydney wharves will be idle tomorrow for a stopwork meeting of watersiders to decide their attitude on the Government's ultimatum.
