BRITAIN IN BAD WAY. YUGOSLAVIA IN FRONT. GERMANY ELIMINATES NORWAY. LONDON, May 22. In the Davis Cup contest between Britain and Yugoslavia at Zagreb Mitic (Yugoslavia) beat Butler (Britain), 6—3, 6 —l, 6— i; Punec (Yugoslavia) was leading Sliayes (Britain), 6—4, 4—6, 6—2, 3—2 when bad light stopped play. When the second rubber was resumed this morning Punec won the fourth set, and Britain was thus two down. The
Yugoslavians? also opened strongly in the doubles, and Punec and Mitic were leading 7—5, 6—3 when rain stopped play. Britain therefore is in danger of elimination without resource to the two remaining sigles. At Berlin, Germany, having won the opening singles, eliminated Norway when Henkel and Metaxa in the doubles beat Uaanes and Jensen, 6—l, 6—2, 6—3. At Marseilles Petra (France) beat Xogues (Monaco) 6—l, 6—l, 6—o, and Destremeau (France) beat Medecin (Monaco) 6—3, 6—o, 6—l. At Stockholm Schroder (Sweden) beat Fischer (Switzerland), B—6, 6—2. 6—o; Maneff (Switzerland) beat Kholson (Sweden), 6—l, 6—l, 2—6, 6—l. In the doubles Schroder and Rholson beat Fischer and Maneff, 6—2. 5—7, 6 —4, 7—5. When Schroder beat Maneff to-day Switzerland was eliminated.
