STARTS TO-DAY.

AMERICAN CHALLENGE. J. GOODMAN FAVOURITE. BRUEN NOT COMPETING. * N The British amateur golf championship commences to-day at Troon, Scotland, when a strong contingent of American players—the team -which has come over to compete against Britain in the Walker Cup in June—and five players from Australia will be taking part. The latest news from England is that the American Johnny Goodman, who has won both the American open and amateur championship during his brilliant career, is the favourite. It is significant that in the last three visits of the United States Walker Cup team to Great Britain one of the players from across the AtlanticOcean has been the winner. The successful players were:—lo26. J. Swcetser; 1930. Bobby Jones; 1934, Lawson Little. The present holder of the title is R. Sweeney. The young Irish player James Bruen. who played a remarkable four rounds of 282 recently in the British trials, is not competing in the championship.

PENNANT CONTEST. RBMUBRA DEFEATS PUPUKB. The second round of the inter-club coif competition was played during the weekend, Remuera beating Pupuke by 8 games to 2, two being all square. The match 'between North Shore and Otnhuhu resulted In a tie of five games each and two all square. Stedman, of Maungakiekie three-putted on the eighteenth green he threw away his chance in tlie North Auckland amateur golf championship this afternoon. W, J. Glanville, of Whangarei, five times winner of the title, was at this stage 1 up, and won the match then, although it should have gone on to the nineteenth. At the turn both players, who had gone out in 41, were all square. The North Auckland handicap was won by D. J. Thompson (Whangarei), playing on 6, who beat C. R. Hargrave (Rotorua), playing on 12, 4 and 2. NORTHERN WAIKATO TITLE. G. C. JOHNSTON SUCCESSFUL. The Northern Waikato golf championship, conducted in conjunction with the Onewhero Golf Club's annual tournament, was won by G. C. Johnston (Pukekohei with a gros« score of 163 over 36 holes. J.
