AUCKLAND CLUB. WATTERS WINS EASILY. The Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club held their third series of winter competitions in the Outer Domain on Saturday. The turf was in excellent condition, the 75 yards sprint being run in 7 3-ss, the fastest time this season. It was won by A. C. Bridle off the 12 yards mark by a foot from J. A; McKinnon, with G. Brown only inches away, third. The 3000 yards- steeplechase was closely contested by 29. runners. The finish between Bradley and Watters promised to. be very close as these two, well ahead of the field, came along gamely on the final 200 yards. Bradley maintained a lead or two yards, despite Watters" spurt, when, within 50 yards from the tape, Bradley, to the surprise of the large number of spectators, pulled out and let Watters win. eusily from K. S. Brown, who was about ei"ht yards ahead of Evans and Clarke. Bradley at once reported to M*-. Morton that v bv mistake he had gone off at his wrong time, starting at the call of 51s instead of waiting for 575. All of the 29 competitors were started off In the order of, their handicaps. The limit men, Bryan (8os»), Buchanan and Hannan (80s), Thain, tie Blois, Brown and Watters, on 70», makin* the pace for the first part of the Journey On completion of the first 1000 yards Bryan, Buchanan, Evans. Christie, R. fv Brown and Dunn led in this order. At the start of the final round R. S. Brown was in the lead, followed by Bradley, Evans, Brvan Parkes and Christie, with Watters, Clarke, Birtwhistle and Hill gaining ouickly. Bradley took the lead passing the grandstand for "the last time, witli Watters coming through the" field to dial lenge the .leader. What promised to be a spectacular finish, as Watters had come ut within a few yards of Bradley, was spoill hv Bradley pulling out when leading by sft, about 50 yards from the tape, leaving Watters to,win easily. Clifford handicapper and trainer In the Wellingtor Athletic Club, gave a short talk on somt of the latest scientific systems of trainins for sprint races as taught by E. L. Fltcli late American representative at Olympic Games, who was retained by the Welling ton Centre at a substantial fee as coach Mr. W. Morton thanked Mr. Clifford foi his very practical advice.
