GIVEN FAILS.

MANAWATU HUNT CUP. BRAZEN KING IMPRESSES IN HANDICAP. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") PALMERNTOX XORTH, Saturday. Features of the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting to-dny were the failure of the favourite, Given, in the Hunt Cup after a magifieent display of jumping, and the finishing effort of Bra/.en King in the principal flat handicap. The last-named should do better in the near future. Favourite Fails. Given and Ruenzori were most inquired for in the Manawatu Hunt Cup, but the Akitio-owned Power Chief won convincingly from Padnos, with the favourite third. Ruenzori and Ika were the early leaders, and over the stand double the, first time round Ruenzori was ir> lengths ahead of Ika, with Given, Padnos and Power Chief in close attendance. Ika ran into the lead when Ruenzori made a bad jump, and Given assumed second place, with the other three in a hunch. At the stand double the second time round Ika was just ahead of Given, with Padnos and Power Chief making up ground. Entering the filial circuit. Power Chief ran through to lead, and was followed into the back stretch by Given, with Padnos as their closest attendant. (iiven outjumped Power Chief at the fences, but Power Chief had too much pace on the flat, ami running across the top took the lead and was well clear into the straight. Padno» jumped into second place •at the final obstacle. Power Chief ran home an easy winner ny six lengths ahead of Padnos, with a § similar margin to Given.' Ika was fourth', and Ruenzori was a furlong back.

; n : Conveyer Beats Kena. Arctic King and Kena were best backed in the Palmerston North Handicap, with little more than £50 separating the other seven starters, so even was the betting, but the winner turned up in the A wapuni-trained Conveyer. Aiwai led Conveyer, Passion Fruit, Liane. Slippery arid Old Surrey out of the straight, the remaining three being bunched at the rear. Aiwai held a twolengths' lead into the back from Conveyer, Kena (moving up), add Passion Fruit., At - the half-mile Kena hod run into second place, and it was not ' till crossing the top that. Brazen King commenced to make lip his leeway, but Aiwai and Conveyer turned for home ahead of Kena, Slippery and Passion Fruit. Once in line for the judge Conveyer assumed the lead and ran home a comfortable winner from Kena. Brazen King finished, fast into third place, a neck away, and close up were Aiwai, Passion Fruit, Old Surrey, and Arctic King, all in close order. Only Three Finish. Red Sun, Count Willonyx and Royal Banquet were evenly backed for the Awapuni Steeplechase arid Royal Banquet eventually woii well from the fav-. ourite. Royal Banquet, Cuiint Willonyx, Dozie and Royal Limoml were the early leaders, with Royal Limoml running up to the leader after jumping four fences, but running right off «t the next (a hencoop). Over the double brush the first time Royal Banquet led Dozie. Count Willonyx and Red Sun. At the same double the next time-round Royal Banquet was still in the van. Count Willonyx being next, and Red Sun displacing Dozie. Count Willonyx chanced the hriiflh goin<? out of the straight nnd came to grief, and Red Sun wa« left to challenge the leader along the back. Royal Banquet, however, was always holding his own and once aafely over the final obstacle he ran home an easy winner by three lengths. Dozie was eight lengths further back. During the day the investment* on the totalizator were £17.333, compared with £17,524 last year, a decrease of £189. Later results are: — MAXAWATTT HUNT CUP of £12.- and trophy value £25.
