SUCCESS OF VALAMITO. FARLAND TAKES SPRINT. SURPRISE VICTORY OF GENERAL RUSE. A feature of the opening day of the Waikato Racing Club's winter meeting was the pood form shown by a number of horses that will be competing at the Great Northern mooting at Ellerslie next month. Silk Sox showed a return to his beet form by decisively beating the opposition in the Waiknto Hurdle*), while Huskie scored a clear-cut win in the To Rapa Steeplechase. The chief flat event, the President's Handicap, went to Yalamito, who beat Enge by a narrow margin. Fnrlanc! led practically throughout in the open sprint event, the Stewards' Handicap, thereby showing a partiality for the course, whore he had been successful on several other occasions. The biggest surprise of the day was the victory of General Ruse in the. Horotiu Handicap, the final event. The totalisator handled £46,020 10/ for the eight races, compared with £36,273 for seven races on the first day last year, an increase of £10,347 10/.
