I So onesided was the trial match played j yesterday between Auckland and the Rest j of the North Island that it held little I interest for the spectators. Auckland won by tihe big margin of 67 points to 14. It | would have been better had the teams j been rearranged at half-time, as AuckI land then had over 30 points on. Howi ever, no change was made in the Auckland side, and scores came quickly, the defence of the visitors being extremely weak at times. The Rest could not match Auckland in any department of the game, although ji- thei* forwards in the scrums and tight play made a good showing. C-ootes, the Wellington front row man was the beet, while Lewia, of Taranaki, an<l Taylor often showed up. The Rest's backs lacked both polish and combination, although there were occaS sional bright bits of individual play. McGarvey, the Bay of Plenty win*, showed £> promise, as also did Tarplett, of South gj Auckland, on the other wing, and Uatuku, Sf a Bay of Plenty five-eighth.

The Auckland backs combined well, and threw the ball about freely. They nil showed up well in attack, and Smith at

full-back, bwides playing a., good. game. I showed marked skill as a goal kickcr, some of his seven successful shots being taken from wide angle*.
