HIGHWAY DANGER.
GROWTH OF BLACKBERRY.
The extent to which blackberry is encroaching on the fringes of forest and scenic reserves, and at other plaeee on the edges of numerous highways, is a matter which concerns motorists deeply. An investigation was made recently by the Automobile Association (Auckland), and it was found that the menace of blackberry was much greater than would a]ij>ear from a casual glance. On the sides of highways passing through unpopulated country, through gorges and many eeenie locations there is glowing a barrier of this noxious weed, which in many enses obstructs motorists from taking advantage of pleasant picnic spots or resting places./ In the Rotorua. district, in the Mamakus, in the Mangamuka and Waipu fiorges, through the Kinjj Country, in
fact, in practically every district in the province, the position is such that prompt action by highway authoritiee and local bodies is called for to prevent a further spread of the nuisance. The association is making representations to the Moin Highways Board, to county councils mid the Lands and Survey Department.
