TROTTING.

EPSOM TRIALS. FOREST JEWEL PLEASES. VANORA LOOKS WELL. Although there is no trotting in the Auckland province until next Saturday i week, when the Cambridge Club will hold a meeting at Claudelands, quite a number of horses were asked to show' their paces at Alexandra Park this morning, the chief item being a work-out between Forest • Jewel (L. Mitchell), Worth v Quest (U. Stiil>l)s), Vanora IL. .1. Mahonevj. Tommy ] McKlwyn (A. AlcKeiizie), Bedford (U. Smith) and Ureat (limn (S. SI. August). This contest had most of the elements of a race and in a good contest Forest .level, who, with Worthy Quest, got all the best of the start, comfortably defeated her five opponents over a mile and a half in 3.20 .'!-."). She ran the first mile in 'J.I!) and tin- last half in 1.7 3-5. This was quite good time, especially as the track was on the dead side. (treat ('li,mii was second. Bedford third and Tommy McF.lwvn fourth. Vanora and Worthy Quest, pulled out at the mile-aml-a-quarter post. Worthy Quest was (lie first to show out from Forest Jewel and Vanora. I-Scdford : uas next, with Tommy AlcKlwyu and tireat (.'hum .some distance away. Forest ' Jewel was just in front of Worthy Quest as they passed the mile, while (ireat Chum, wiile out, had run into third place. Forest Jewel maintained her advantage to the end and won comfortably from tireat (hum. who had covered a lot of extra ground. Bedford uas a couple of lengths away, just ahead of Tommy iliKhv.nt. Nothing looked better than Valium, and it will be surprising if he does not add to! his successes beforo the season closes, 'this chestnut sou of Key dc (ho was passed on by a couple of trainers who could do no good with him until he came into the hands of Mahoney, who was almost immediately successful with him. The pacer Lucky Love (W. Willetts) went well without the hopples over two miles, running the first mile in 2.20, the mile and a half in 3.28, and the full distance in 4.38. He went smoothly throughout and looks in great heart. The trotter Wall broke twice when going with Top Hand (J. Hcnnett), but the- latter paced nicely to get to the end of two miles in 4.50; the last half mile in 1.14. Nothing went better than the three-year-old Kquipoise when pacing a mile and a half for S. M. August in 3.28. He paced the last mile in 2.10. This son of Key de Oro is due to add to his success in the not far distant future. Autumn Lu ((i. Stubbs) went with l'etite Jewel (J. Funnell) over a mile and a quarter in 3.10, but the latter spoilt tfte effort by breaking twice.
