There were few nieta led roade .n the district 13 years a-o but large crowds enjoyed the fun and a blackboard totalisator was well patronised A eeven-furlong track on Mr. Mahunga's property has been ploughed already, and an enthusiastic meeting held at Parua Bay decided to proceed with the project. Offers of, support were received from all surrounding districts. Mr. J. G.Bajrclay, M.P., wae appointed patron, Mr., a Telfer president, and Messrs. H. McKenzie and D. S. Kerr joint secretaries.
'The subject is one in which I am particularly interested," wrote the Minister of Internal Affaire, the Hon. W. E. Parry, to the organisers, "and I am pleased to say that while in the past the rules of racing did not meet the the New. Zealand Baring Conference at ite laet annual meeting agreed to amend them, which will allow sports clubs to include horse races in their programmes. Horses for such events are to he owned, trained and ridden by persons other than licensed trainers, jockeys, apprentice jockeys, stablemen or persons employed in the management, training, riding or tare of horses registered under the rules of racing. "A license under the Race Meetings Act of 1909 will be required, and applications for this should be made to me after obtaining;, registration from the New Zealand Racing Conference."
