NICELY PLACED. When ehe laet won at Epsom Bold Venture was responsible for a tine finishing effort. She did not look to possess any jhance of catching Adversity when the straight was entered, but J.-T. Paul's mare came on in great style and just got ap to win. Since then she raced at the Hawera meeting, where she secured a third ■placing. On the front of the Visitors' Handicap on Saturday at Hamilton »he must be given a chance. BACK FROM ADDINGTON. The useful' mare Our Peggy, after an unsuccessful campaign at AiU'iington, will be back in Auckland to compete at the Waikato meeting. The bay mare took on the best of her grade at Addington and it was no surprise to find her beaten. At the Waikato meeting she will not meet euch strong , opposition and the recent racing ehe hag had ehould see her at her best in the Kaipaki Handicap, the 2.51 mile and a, quarter, in which she figures •n the front. FIELD OF TEN. There Is just , a useful field of ten accepted for in the chief event, the Autumn Handicap, to be decided at the Waikato meeting. Of the three on the front Twenty Grand reads best and shduld have no difficulty in beating Guid Hairst and Kewpie's Crest. Argolis, Gay Sister and Musketeer are on 12 yards, and if consistency goes for anything Argolis ehould go well. Guid Hairst and Musketeer did not race well a week ago at »Epsbm. Our War, 36 yards, should beat Winaway on the same mark, but both Crocus and Proletarian will get support. They are on 48 yards and although Crocus failed in her engagements at the championship meeting at Addington the opposition is not so strong next week-end. , A likely pair at present to be favoured are Twenty Grand* and Our War. A BAD RUN. Followers of horses trained by F. J. Smith, and there are not a few of them, must be in deep orf the debit side of the ledger since the summer meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club. People in Auckland have got so used to seeing Takanini trainer-driver saluting the judge that the bad run he has experienced lately is almost incredible. The stable has won three races since Christmas, but Smith has not driven any "of the three, and he himself must have had somewhere about 50 drives in succession without landing a winner. BINGEN BLOOD. The influence of the Bingen blood infused into New Zealand trotting mostly through the agency of his son Nelson Bingen, was again brought under notice at the Otaki Trotting Club's matinee meeting on Saturday. Of the eix races decided no lens than • three of the victors claimed Nelson Bingen as their sire or grand-sire. The Bingen line has been on tho decline in America of recent years owing to several of his best sons being exported, but its influence overseas has been more predominant than ever. Tan John, who won the Otaki Handicap, is a eon of Worthy Bingen, who took a record of 4.48 2-5 as a trotter before unsoundness interfered with his racing career, and he •was retired to the stud. Worthy Bingen is a son of that prolific breeder Bertha Bell, who hns proved herself one of the greatest broorl mares ever Imported to the Dominion. She was foaled in 1909, and bred to American time produced Bell Bingeu to Bingen, but he was of no account, and never won a race. The two following -yoars her foals died. and Worthy Binnen came next. Sent on a visit to Nelson Bingen again next season Great Binaen was the result of the mating. He proved himself one of the finest racehorses of riis day, and this was when there was a plethora of first-class pacers. He took a recov.fl of 4.19 2-5 before hi« career end e<l, and of recent times has been prominent at the stud.
