A decision to ask the Government for it subsidy to make the South IslandMelbourne shipping service a continuous one was reached at a meeting of the executive of the South Island Travel Association to-day. Mr. W. A Ott. chairman of the 'Bluff Harbour Board! said that during the winter a smaller vessel would be put on the run.
"The service should not lie intermittent," said Mr. Ott. "The Union Steam Ship Company deserves every credit for tho service it is giving. Tam more convinced of tlint now that T have seen the costs of running the service. The company is doing excellent work at n KiiliKtnntiiil loss, and outside assistance i.-s required." Mr. C. JI. filihborn. secretary of the Lyltclt.m irnrluiiir Hoard, said it was not reasonable I<> expel the company to run iit a. loss.
The Rev. K. T. Cox. Mayor of Diniedin: Why not ask for a subsidy for the winter service?
Mr. Cliliborn: There is a loss on the summer service, too.
M>\ J. J. Pollard said tire previous subsidy for a whole-year service with two boats was £30.000. When the Manuka was wrecked the service was parried on by one ship, and the subsidy was withdrawn.
A motion was carried fci ask the Government for a subsidy for a continuous service.
