RECORD YEAR.
BUOYANT REVENUE. POST AND TELEGRAPH. MINISTER QUOTES FIGURES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHI/RCH, Thursday. The year just ended has been a record one for the Po.st and Telegraph Pijiartnic.lit, according to figures quoted by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) at the opening of the new Lin wood post office.
Mr. Sullivan, who perforated t.be ceremony in the absence of the Postmaster-General (the Hon. F. Jciks), received the figures fro in Wellington.
Gross revenue of the Department, Mi. Sullivan announced, had never oefore been so buoyant. During; the yeai ended March 31, P.l.'iV, the revenue increased from £3,500,000 to £3.55(i,000. and the year just ended would briug tiie total up to over £4,250,000.
Postages had increased by £131,000, toll revenue by £75,000, and iLclepaone exchange subscriptions by £120.000.
It was interesting to notice that subscribers to the telephone exchange had increased to 148,000, the former highest number being 138440, in 1937. Prior to that, the peak number was 132,855, in 1930.
On the savings bank side ther-e had been a remarkable increase in the last two years. During the year the Tojtal amount at credit increased fr*»m £58,000,000 to £03,000,000. That again was a record. A similar iiit:re«i»e of £a,00i1,000 took place during the year ended March, 1937.
