LOUIS AND SCHMELING.
WORLD BOXING CONTEST. AT NEW YORK ON JUNE 22. NEW YORK, April 27. It is announced that Joe Louis and Max Schuieling will fight for the world's heavy-weight boxing, championship (now held by Louis), in New York, on June 22.
Schmeling and Louis previously met at the Yankee Stadium, New York, on June 19, 1936, the former securing a knock-out victory 2m 29s after the start of the twelfth round. The bout was an elimination contest for the heavy-weight crown, the winner being promised a match with the title-holder, J. Braddock. However, owing to strong anti-Nazi feeling in the United States, the promoter of the title bout, fearing that Schmeling's appearance would prejudice the gate receipts, substituted Louis to meet Braddock. It was in this fight, staged in New York on June 22, 1937, that Louis won the championship.
