CHAMBER MUSIC.
SOCIETY'S FIRST CONCERT.
INTERESTING PROGRAMME.
The Lewis Eady Hall was well filled last evening when the Auckland Chamber Music Society gave its first concert of the season before an appreciative audience An interesting programme opened with the performance of a Trio (Opus 15) bv a Scandinavian composer, Gustave HaW the players being Isobel Langlands (violm), Trevor de C. Lowe ('cello) and Marjone Gully (piano). This proved to be a very bright, lively and melodious work which, however, seemed rather iengthy and somewhat lacking in contrast*, the andante, lyrical in character, being, perhaps, the most attractive of the lour movements.
The same combination was again heard m a trio by Saint-Saens, No. 18 ("The Desert ), considered to be one of the most inspired moments of the composer's youth Excellent team work was displayed throughout by the instrumentalists *in these two works both of which presented many difficulties of execution. The ensemble was commendably even, the the attack decisive, while the tion was tasteful. w£ n< Vi° f the , h! «* M «*t- of the evening was the performance of Rachmaninoff's bv"A,^i tC - an n ? el, ° S onata in G Minor Towi W 9 h *?* J reVOr de Clive J owe. This ,s considered to be one of or,. TIT* S m ° St in ? nir «l works and is one of the most popular of his compositions ,n R,,s S , a . Both players are to be cornphrnented upon a well-balanced and tasteful performance of a verv diffic^t Vocal relief was provided by Mr. James Leighton. who sang with artistic exnres" sion a group 0 f three songs fir fchSSn anrt K. Strauss, adding in response to K'"' 1 ?. applause Schubert's "The Organ Grinder."
