FIRST SOCIAL OF SEASON
The atmosphere of Springbok-land was reflected happily last evening at the first social of this season arranged bv the South Africa Club in the Penwomen's Club rooms. The president, Mr. J. A. Albrecht, with Mrs. Albreeht! wore host and hostess and extended a welcome to members and friends. Mrs. Albrecht was wearing a frock of black lace.
Some 20 tables were occupied with bridge, the winners of the principal prizes, which were presented by the president, assisted by the treasurer. Mr. Max Robinson, were" Miss Jovce Grainger, Mrs. A. T. Oswin, Mrs.'Frith and Mr. Kidd. A contribution to the enjovment was the singing of Mr. W. F. Gard, whose baritone voice was heard to advantage in "The Airman," "Still as the Night" (Bohin), "The Bandalero" and "The Dervish Vigil," the accompaniments being artistically played by Miss Betty Nairn.
Mr. Albrecht announced with regret the resignation, owing to unforeseen'circumstances, of the secretary, Miss Fay Alexander, to whose capable work in the formation of the club he referred in appreciative terms. He was glad to state, however, that the duties had been taken over by Mrs. A. F. Hammond, of Devonport, an intimation that was greeted with enthusiasm. The speaker also stated that a suitable Springbok badge had been adopted for club members. An appetising supper was handed round and a successful gathering concluded with the National Anthem.
Among those present were: Mesdames L. H. Grainger, Sydney Smith. L. Frith W. E. Hedditch, A. F. Hammond. A. Patterson, Seed, Turner, Fray, E. Bell, H. J. Mills, Worley, McCorma'ck. Perrin. Jebb. Oswin, Pryatt, Mein, W. Shirley. H. Ward Smith and Misses D. Chapman, Joy Smith, Stitehbury, Berry, Potts. Grainger, Stitehbury, B. Lewin, Bainbridge and McCulloch.
