NEW CAR STOLEN.
THEFT FROM SHOWROOM. VEHICLE NOT RECOVERED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. Breaking into Messrs. Russell and Peterson's garage at the corner of Dee and Leet Streets at the week-end thieve-, removed from the showroom a new 1938 model American motor car. It has not yet been recovered. Taking advantage of the absence of lights in the city, due to power restri.tions, following the dry spell, the intruders forced the door of the Leet Street entrance to the premises and selected a car which was on exhibition between two others. The vehicle was driven out of the showrooms and the othcr>were restored to their original positions.
This was one of a series of thefts and attempted burglaries which occurred over the same period. The petrol station of Mr. Eardley Bell, in Kelvin Street, was robbed of about 20 gallons of petrol, a lock on one of the pumps being broken. A motorist who left his car outside the Princess Hotel on Sunday night, found that his number-plates had been removed. It was also discovered this mornin" that attempts had been made to force an entry into three business premises in the city—Dickeys, Limited, and the Self-Help shops in Dee and Tay Streets. All doors bore the marks of a jemmy. It is thought that an attempt to break into a grocer's shop in Gore had some connection with the Invercargill burglaries. Because of the restrictions on the use of electric light the police patrolthare been increased as far as possible, but shopkeepers have been advised + ."> tfke extra precautions while "the restrijtions are in force.
