NOMINATIONS

LOCAL POLLS.

MANY CANDIDATES. CITY MAYORALTY. TRIANGULAR CONTEST. FIFTY-FOUR FOR COUNCIL. Evidence of keen interest in the local body elections on May 11 was shown today when nominations closed for the city and suburban mayoralties, seats on borough and county councils and other local bodies. Three candidates have been nominated for the position of Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, the present Mayor, Mr. Joseph Sayegh, the official Labour party candidate, end Mr. James William Payne, a resident of Ponsonby. For the 21 seats on the Auckland City Council there are 54 candidates, compared with 58 candidates at the previous election. Tickets have been nominated by both the Labour party and the Citizens' Committee. For the five city seats on the Auckland Hospital Board there are 13 candidates, while there are 11 candidates for the four city seat* on the Auckland Harbour Board. Although the list of City Council nominations is a lengthy one, it falls short of the highest number yet received —a total of 07 in 1929. In both 1927 and 1929 there were four nominations for the city mayoralty. The total of names on the city electoral roll stands to-day at 00,119, inclusive of the supplementary roll which is to be authorised by hte City Council to-morrow night. The corresponding figure in 1935 was 01,653.

Judging by the nominations, there will be good competition for seats on the suburban borough councils. In Mount Eden Borough there will be a triangular contest for the mayoralty.

At Papakura the election will be to return a Mayor and council for the first time. Recently the district was advanced in status from that of a town board area.
