S. AFRICAN ISSUES.
Nationalists Advocate Republic. PARTY ALIGNMENTS. (Received 9.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, April 20. The United party will contest all the 150 seats at the general election. Nominations include 103 Nationalists, ."33 Dominion party, 37 Labour, 31 Independents, 3 Grev Shirts and 3 Socialists. Four United party candidates have been returned unopposed. The election takes place on May IS.
Dr. Malan, leader of the Nationalists, states that the only solution of the racial struggle will be a republic. When Britain places South Africa's fate in her own hands she is prepared to be Britain's friend. Colonel C. F. Stallard, K.C., D.5.0., leader of the Dominion party, advocates Empire unity, with the several Dominions as free partners therein. General Hertzog characterised the demands for a republic at present as an absurdity, and General Smuts urges the people to vote for prosperity.
